Why Leadings?

God's Wrath

Why was Sodom destroyed? Ezekiel tells us in chapter 16, verse 49: "This was the sin of your sister, Sodom: Pride, full-ness of bread, and abundance of idleness. Neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."

That's also why Jerusalem was destroyed.

And now, with greed as our national virtue, what hope is there for the United States of America? We are afflicted by imperialistic pride, obesity, and entertainment addiction, and we are all called to do our part to "strengthen the hand of the poor and needy".

"Strengthen the hand" is the King James wording. Modern translations say "help the poor and needy." And there's a world of difference between the two. Helping the poor = as little as throwing some cash in the Salvation Army bucket at Christmas time. That's charity. It's doing for, not doing with.

My Grandmother was right about charity. On a below-zero day, she went out on the back porch with a skillet to throw hot grease on the back-yard snow. She shivered as she re-entered the kitchen and said, "Wooooh, colder than charity."

Strengthening the hand is much different. We get personally involved with another person who needs help, and we work with her or him to get the needed help. That's risky. You're vulnerable. It takes prayer, time and patience. You need knowledge and wisdom from the LORD. There are great rewards, however. You get a brother or sister.

Strengthening the hand is great work for our churches -- which we ignore far more often than we perform. Why? Because we're afflicted with the Ameri-can curse of individualism. Christians are to be a tribe -- a tribe that takes care of each other. In Galatians 6:16, Paul calls us "the Israel of God" -- the new 13th tribe.

Jesus said, "The poor you shall always have with you." He didn't mean that as a curse -- the notion that the poor are an inevi-table nuisance and expense, to be hidden in the slums. Rather, He was saying, "You shall always be among the poor."

When you strengthen hands, you fulfill Deuteronomy 15:4-5: "However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the LORD your God . . ." It's a glorious responsibility and promise.

And how do prosperous Americans fulfill that promise? Generally, by making sure they have no contact with people who are poor -- and we have been that way from our beginnings in the 17th century. Early villages in Massachusetts solved the problem by out-lawing poor people. Today, we deal with the same problem by confining the poor in urban reservations, our slums.

As the Supreme Court Bailiff says at the beginning of each session, "God save the United States of America..."

The business of government is mostly housekeeping,

but during political campaigns we convert it to theology.

Are you still convinced that Barack Obama is not a US citizen?

According to today’s Christian Science Monitor, 55% of all Republicans still think that he was not US-born – even after he released his detailed Hawaiian birth certificate on April 27.

If you’re convinced that he was not born in the US, why don’t you take action?

Barack ObamaUnder the U.S. Constitution, you are entitled to have a President who is born in the United States of America.  Here’s the relevant Constitutional language:

Article II, Section 1, Clause 6.   “No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of the President . . .”

You can gather like-minded friends, set up a legal-attack fund, hire a good lawyer, and seek an injunction in your local Federal District Court – an injunction to prevent Barack Obama from serving as president for the rest of his term, as well as prohibiting him from running for president again in 2012.

Great idea!   Why hasn’t this been done before?

Let’s consider two specific situations –

First, Hillary Clinton.  I expect that any knowledgeable American will be able to answer yes to the following six questions –

Did Hillary Clinton really want the Democratic nomination for President in 2008?     Hillary Clinton

Would she have done anything lawful to get the nomination?

Is Hillary Clinton a capable lawyer?

Is it likely that she knows about Article II, Section 1, Clause 6 of the US Constitution?

As a ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, did she have the power to investigate anything which might threaten the security of the United States, including Barack Obama's citizenship status?

Or, if she wanted a private investigation, did she and her husband have the funds to research thoroughly Barack Obama’s citizenship?

Conclusion:  If she had had the slightest basis for questioning Barack Obama’s US citizenship, it seems likely she would have sought a Federal injunction against his seeking the nomination.

John McCainBut, she didn’t.  Then secondly consider the situation of the Republican National Committee and Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain in the late summer of 2008.   They too really wanted to win.

If they had had the slightest basis for questioning Barack Obama’s US citizenship, it seems likely they would have sought a Federal injunction against his running for President.

Likely?  They would have filed suit in the Federal District Court the morning after Barack Obama’s nomination.  There is nothing else they could have done to throw the Democrats into more disarray than by disqualifying the Democratic nominee.

But, they too did nothing.

Possibility to consider:  Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen, born in Hawaii in 1961, two years after Hawaii became a state in 1959.

But, all this is a waste of time and electronic space.  Phyllis McGinley said it all:  “Never argue with a true believer.”

Purpose of this blog is to compile a book for my grandchildren to read in 25 years.
